If you enjoy walking or cycling, you are in the perfect place. You can find endless walking and/or cycling tracks and paths in the area, to suit all levels and ages. The Rothiemurchus Centre is a handy place to ask advice about trails and tracks, and they have maps too.
However, below are some of our favourites.
If you are interested in hiring bikes, there are a few shops in Aviemore you can visit:
A lovely gentle circular route which takes in views of both lochs and the Cairngorms.
a stunning path which goes all the way from Grantown on Spey to Aviemore. We usually start in Boat of Garten and head to Aviemore. Kinchurdy Road, across from the Post office in the village, is your starting point. Follow the road, until it narrows on to a track. Follow the signs to Aviemore.
Great for walking or cycling. Boat to Aviemore is approx. 6 miles. The scenery is varied and very pretty. If youre lucky, you might even ride alongside the Strathspey Steam Train! If you fancy a less strenuous return journey, the steam train allows bikes. Check the website for times. https://strathspeyrailway.co.uk

Drive up the ski road, and at the Reindeer Centre take a left up towards the centre then drive past the front fof it and continue to the end of the road, past Glenmore Lodge. Park up and follow the path for a super 30 minute walk through the woods on good walking paths, to the Green Loch, which you can’t miss. Enjoy the views of the loch, or even take a dip on a hot summers day.
Turning right, just after Treezone at the Rothiemurchus estate will lead you to Loch an Eilein. This makes a lovely walk or cycle, suitable for all ages. The path leads all the way round the loch and is mainly flat with lumps and bumps along the way and lovely views all year round. The route is approx. 4 miles long.
This is a super cycle including some interesting uphill stretches, with the reward of a few long downhill routes, through hills, woodland and on quiet roads.
Start as above for the Green Loch, but continue past the loch towards the Bothy. This cycle takes you to Nethy Bridge, or you can hang a left to Loch Garten then back to Boat of Garten.
You can’t miss Loch Morlich on the ski road. There are many walking and cycling routes around the loch. We enjoy taking the bikes from the bottom of Loch Morlich through stunning stretches of woodland, including some fun downhills, streams and bridges to Loch and Eilein. You can usually park by the roadside at the gate to Rothiemurchus Lodge. You will immediately cross a baily bridge which has a gate at the other side. The track sweeps left.
Perfect to blow away the cobwebs, this climb is aptly named! Park in the main carpark at the Ski Centre, head up between the buildings towards the hills. There are some lovely gardens here and a great view of the funicular from underneath its tracks. Follow the signs for The Windy Ridge for an uphill climb all the way to the Ptarmigan restaurant where you can take in the view and visit the centre and restaurant. If you are still feeling energetic, you can walk back down, or you can purchase a return ticket for the funicular train
We have named this cycle ourselves. It involves parking at the ski centre carpark, cycling downhill – mainly on tracks – all the way into Aviemore. This cycle is great fun, however, there are some tricky rocky parts near the start, so not suitable for really young children. Buses run fairly regularly from the village, up to the mountain, so if you padlock your bikes somewhere safe (eg at the train station or at Rothiemurchus) you can enjoy a wee bus ride back up to collect your car.
