EATING OUT

ACTIVITIES AND THINGS TO DO

Aviemore is the outdoor capital of Scotland, with a never ending list of things to do. We have been holidaying in the area for over 10 years, so we have tried to capture the things we have enjoyed with our family

Boat of Garten

ANDERSON’S BISTRO

Anderson’s is in the village of Boat of Garten, and is perfect for a special occasion or holiday treat.  This small bistro uses local produce to create its delicious menu.  Children are welcome, and staff are usually happy to accommodate special requests.

The baked potato ice cream is worth a try!  Booking recommended.

1896 GALLERY & COFFEE SHOP

Unfortunately not a coffee shop any more.. but a lovely gallery.

THE BOAT HOTEL

The Boat Hotel serves good bar food.  The beer garden is a perfect spot on those sunny days.

THE BOAT OF GARTEN POST OFFICE AND VILLAGE SHOP

For a selection of hot pies and pastries, or a filled roll, the post office shop is perfect stop for lunch or a snack on the go.

Or, pick up all the essentials to make your own picnic here.

Grantown on Spey

HIGH ST. MERCHANTS

This is a cosy little café in Grantown serving lovely lunches and coffees with delicious home bakes.

There are some locally made nik-naks to browse whilst you wait.  The atmosphere here is always friendly, and the fire through the back is usually lit.

THE SYLHET BRASSERIE

The Sylhet is in Grantown.  The restaurant, although it is nothing fancy on the inside, serves really good Indian food.  Or you can do take-away, but remember its around a 15 minute drive back to the house.

CRAIG BAR

This is a very traditional pub in Grantown, with a cosy, friendly atmosphere.  Families, and pets are welcome here.  The menu is unusual though – pie and chips!  The Craig Bar serves around 10/12 different gourmet pies, such as the Moo & Blue A Beef Steak and Long Clawson Stilton Pie.  All the meat in these connoisseur pies is 100% fee range British.  Booking recommended, especially at busy times.

Aviemore

MOUNTAIN CAFÉ

So sad that this shut down during COVID, however KJ now has a bakery and takeaway in Grantown well worth a visit. KJ's Both Bakery

PIZZARIACH

is in the Dalfaber estate in Aviemore.  There is a small seating area for eating in, but the take away pizza service is super, with pizzas made freshly while you wait.   There is a family deal including pizza, curly fries and drinks which is great value and a bit of holiday fun!

ROUTE 7

A great new cafe as part of the Highland Home Centre. Great food with a wood burning stove pizza oven.

DELI MAIR

Deli Mair is a delicatessen in Aviemore, selling a wide range of locally grown fruit and veg.  There is also a good selection of specialist foods.  The deli also serves take away sandwiches, baked potatoes, paninis, good coffees, hot chocolate and home bakes.  A handy stop-off on a bike ride, or an easy picnic lunch.  There are a few seats outside for those sunny days.

THE COFFEE POT

in Aviemore is a traditional café, next door to Deli Mair, with reasonable prices.  They serve fresh pancakes.

SMIFFY’S FISH AND CHIPS

If you fancy a chipper supper, Smiffy’s in the centre of Aviemore won’t disappoint.  There is seating inside and out, so you can eat your fish supper immediately to avoid those soggy chips.

THE CAIRNGORM HOTEL

The Cairngorm is a lovely Highland Hotel.  Food is served all day, in the dining room and lounge areas.  The hotel does not take bookings, but during busy times, if you are prepared to wait with a drink for a short time, you will usually be seated quite quickly.  There is a large menu, with plenty traditional, Scottish pub grub.  We would recommend the carvery.  There is usually a choice of several different roasts, all of which are served inside a large Yorkshire pudding.

LA TAVERNA RISTORANTE

La Taverna Italian restaurant on the roundabout at the Rothiemurchus end of Aviemore.  This popular, family run restaurant featured on tv last year as part of The Mountain documentary series.  This restaurant is often very busy, so best to phone ahead.  The buffet is very popular, especially with children, of all ages.

THE DRUIE RESTAURANT AND CAFÉ

The Druie is at the Rothiemurchus centre, just outside Aviemore on the ski road.  The Café serves food all day, including lunches, coffees and homebakes. The seating area outside is popular on a warm day.

Ice Cream is also available in the deli next door at the centre.  The perfect stop-off during a walk or cycle in the area.

THE STOREHOUSE

The Storehouse is a café and restaurant upstairs in the Day Lodge at the bottom of the Cairngorm Mountain.  A perfect stop-off during a day of walking or skiing, or even if you have just taken a drive up the ski road to admire the scenery and check out the attractions.  Serving Starbucks Coffee, and a wide range of hot and cold food, this is a popular café all year round.
